David Buel Knickerbacker papers, 1869-1878.

Letters from Knickerbacker to Bishop William Rollinson Whittingham describe the Bishop Seabury Mission, Faribault, Minn., and its divinity school, including the faculty and Knickerbacker's duties as dean, 1869; efforts to elect him Bishop of Iowa, 1875; and his declining to become Missionary Bishop of New Mexico and Arizona, 1878. The material in the collection pre-dates Knickerbacker's appoinment as Bishop of Indiana.

William Rollinson Whittingham was born in New York City, N.Y., and graduated from the General Theological Seminary in 1825. He was ordained as an Episcopal priest in 1829 and became rector of Saint Mark's Church in Orange, N.J. Whittingham later served as rector of Saint Luke's Church in New York City, and in 1835 became a professor of ecclesiastical history at the General Theological Seminary.
